Program Summary:
Shapiro AZA and Wise BBG learned through a series of discussions and activities how to promote and support saving Darfur and stopping genocide.
Full Description:
About 3 weeks before the project, Shapiro S'gan, Wesley Patt, and Wise S'ganit, Marissa Finkelman decided they wanted to have a social action program. After going through many choices, they finally decided on one of the largest world conflicts in today's world, the genocide in Darfur, Sudan. In order to get the message across, Wesley and Marissa came up with a series of activities and discussions, including a member of Wise BBG speak about her past experiences helping to "save Darfur". Before the program, members of the chapters were asked to bring a pair of gently used shoes taht would be donated to a village in Darfur. The program began with an introduction about the current genocide in Darfur and relating it to the Holocaust in order to help create a link to Judaism. After, a member of Wise BBG discussed how she planned a walk that benefitted Darfur. Wesley and Marissa then showed the entire group a power point presentation about making a difference in Darfur. After the discussions and powerpoint, Wesley and Marissa led the group in a "relay race" with challenges pertaining to Darfur. For example, the first challenge was each member was not allowed to wear shoes because many Darfur children do not have the luxury of having shoes. Another challenge was each member had to carry another member on their back to represent how Darfur children often carry the weight of their entire families. After the relay race, the members got into different groups and created t-shirts that had slogans about saving Darfur.
Cost: The only cost was a package of white t-shirts for creating the slogans. The s'ganim borrowed markers from the house that the project was at and the house also had a large t.v. with a lot of room in front of it for presenting the power point.
Through the discussions, activities, and presentation, the members of Shapiro and Wise learned that it is up to them to change the world.
Submitter's Suggestions:
Make sure the house that the project is at has a t.v. that you can hook up a computer to so you can show your power point to the entire group.
