Program Summary:

Capital AZA and Ra'naan BBG got together the week before our JCC's Purim carnival to learn how to bake hamentauchens and make them for our fundraiser!

Full Description:

  • 18 1/4 ounces yellow cake mix, I use Betty Crocker
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • fruit preserves or solo fruit filling

*You can multiply this recipe depending on how much your group wants to make!

 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Spray cookie sheet with cookie spray.
  3. In a large mixing bowl combine flour and cake mix.
  4. Stir in water and eggs until a stiff dough forms.
  5. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out to 1/8 inch.
  6. Cut into 2-3 inch circles, I use the top of a drinking glass dipped in flour before cutting.
  7. Place dough 2 inches apart on cooking sheet.
  8. Place a teaspoon of filling in the center of each circle.
  9. Fold the sides in to form three corners(triangle).
10.Moist edges with water or egg wash before folding if needed.
11.Bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
12.Cool for 2 minutes on cookie sheets and remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Both chapters from Austin met at a location with a kitchen and followed traditional recipes to make Hamentauchen's for the upcoming community Purim carnival. Before the baking started, the girls got together and were taught by artist Mordechai Rosenstein to write in traditional hebrew calligraphy. Each girl experimented with writing their own name. Each executive board member from the boys and girls chapters were assigned to bring 2-3 supplies for the baking. After demonstration from the few who knew how to make these special cookies already, an assembly line was quickly formed. The symbolism of the Hamnetauchen and Hamen's hat/ears was discussed, all while Austin BBYO cranked out over 500 hamentauchens.

Submitter's Suggestions:

*Make sure responsible members are in charge of bringing baking supplies and ingredients!
*Make sure you have a cleanup crew for after all the baking is done!
